Although some people have perceived disability as an inability, others have seen it as an opportunity to inspire the world. A chance to strive and accomplish even what the ‘able’ would never dream of accomplishing. Overcoming their short comings has seen them triumph over mediocrity and live an aspiring life.
The Coordinator, ADB-HEST Cross cutting issues (Gender, HIV/AIDS and Special Needs) wishes to share with you, an inspiring story of a ‘limbless man’, did I say limbless! Yes with no hands or feet!
Evangelist, international motivational speaker and New York Times best-selling author Nick Vujicic (pronounced “Vooycheech”) was born in 1982 in Melbourne, Australia.
Not different from any child, Nick was challenged by bullying and self-esteem issues. Given his condition, he struggled with depression and loneliness and asked himself why he was different from others.
He always asked himself “Why was I the one born without arms and legs?”
As Nick grew up, accepted his condition, learnt to deal with his disability and gradually accomplished more on his own. A warden at high school inspired him into publically speaking about overcoming adversity. Nick’s first audience was his own school mates.
Today, the ‘guy without limbs’ is a graduate in Accounting and Financial Planning from Griffith University in Logan, Australia. Nick is the founder and president of an international non-profit organization, Life Without Limbs and owns the motivational speaking company, Attitude Is Altitude. He has travelledto over 57 countries, he has spoken to Heads of State, Corporates, school children, in churches and hospitals.
Nick is married to Kanae, in 2012 and they have a son Kiyoshi (born in 2013) and a daughter Dejan, (born in 2015).
“I’m officially disabled, but I’m truly enabled because of my lack of limbs. My unique challenges have opened up unique opportunities to reach so many in need.” -Nick Vujicic
